Bryce canyon national park utah toursism11/18/2023 The entire length of this trail is around 2.3 miles (the walk between Sunrise and Sunset points along the rim at the top is half a mile), meaning if you park at either point and do it as a loop, it’s a ~3-mile hike.īristlecone Loop (easy): From Rainbow Point at the road’s terminus, this trail has you hiking through forest at the park’s highest elevation (9,100 feet), past bristlecone pines as old as 1,800 years. If you continue on the trail towards Sunset Point, you’ll have a fairly strenuous hike up several switchbacks. It starts at Sunrise Point and has you walking among the hoodoos, eventually ending on a spur trail about a mile along the path that overlooks Queens Garden (which gets its name from a distinctive hoodoo called Queen Victoria, one of several whimsically named formations in the park). Queens Garden (easy): Dropping 320 feet into the main amphitheater, this is considered the easiest route down. Bryce also receives more precipitation than many parts of Southern Utah, averaging 15-18 inches per year. Make sure to bring appropriate layers based on the time of year you’re traveling. Average temps in winter get as low as 9 degrees, and in summer as high as the mid-80s. There’s a surprising range of temperatures in the region, thanks to its elevation (climbing from 6,600 to 9,100 feet). Driving along this ridge is surreal and a road trip experience that shouldn’t be overlooked. There’s a stretch between these two towns called the Hogsback - a narrow strip of road that falls off dramatically on both sides into a valley far below. Whether before or after your trip to Bryce Canyon, I highly recommend taking SR 12 east of the park, into/out of Escalante and Boulder. Wherever you’re coming from, you enter the park via State Route 12, an All-American Road that’s one of the most scenic drives in the country. Getting thereīryce Canyon is located in the heart of Southern Utah and can be accessed easily from multiple directions: Salt Lake City to the north, Zion National Park in the southwest, and Escalante to the east. In Bryce Canyon, the spectacular views last a full 24 hours.īottom line: Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit one of Utah’s best parks - one of Earth’s most impressive landscapes. The park also has some of the darkest skies in North America - on an average clear night, you can see 7,500 stars with the naked eye. The park’s series of vast natural amphitheaters (they’re technically not “canyons,” despite the name) have been etched by erosion for millions of years.īeyond the reds and oranges of the “forest of stone,” though, is the amazing amount of life the area supports, including over 400 native plant species, 170 species of birds, and mammals like deer, foxes, mountain lions, and black bears. The experience is visceral and humbling, and to consider the geological forces responsible for creating this unique place is an exercise of immense imagination. IT’S LIKELY YOU’VE SEEN PHOTOS of the bright, colorful hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park - those ancient rock spires shooting up hundreds of feet toward the sky - but there’s no substitute for walking among them.

Subvocalization versus auditory imagery11/18/2023 It is only when the voice is not mine that one is left to wonder what the underlying thought and meaning is. In analogy to ordinary overt speech: When the voice is mine, the thought is mine as well. The more one is engaged in what X could mean, the less one can possibly be engaged in the saying of X, and vice versa. This is due to a trade-off between one’s degree of openness to interpretation on the one hand and one’s bodily appropriation of the discourse on the other. On the level of higher-order meaning-making, outer and inner reverberations link with the presence or absence of spontaneous interpretation, respectively. As a consequence, inner reverberations entail a sense of medium opacity, while outer reverberations may rather be associated with a relative sense of medium transparency. More generally, then, inner reverberations can be said to result from the language of an utterance appearing markedly non-situated. However, the cuing process is subject to many variables pertaining to the text, the individual reader, and the specific reading session. By contrast, inner reverberations may be more likely to occur with discourse particularly lacking in such cues. Outer reverberations may effectively be prompted by textual cues such as oral style, speaker familiarity, and situational embedding. Although outer reverberations can feature some kinesthetic qualities such as a sense of resonance in the reader’s torso, kinesthetic experience is much more pronounced in inner reverberations, and felt motor activity in the articulatory apparatus is a distinctive trait of inner reverberations alone. While outer reverberations represent text as situated speech and may accommodate perceptual detail of the imaginary voice, inner reverberations rather tend to represent text as raw language, where the only auditory qualities to be explored are those of first-person (subvocal) speech production. Meanwhile, inner reverberations reach the mind’s ear via subvocal rehearsal, i. e., covert articulatory activity in the reader’s mouth and throat. Outer reverberations put the reader in the position of a vicarious listener, feeding on activity in the mind’s ear only. The two ends will be referred to as outer and inner reverberations. But as we begin to study narrative VAI experiences in greater detail, they soon fall into two distinct types, or more precisely, position themselves between two ends of a continuum. This description of VAI, however apt, is not very elaborate. But what is it like, in terms of embodiment, to consciously experience VAI? The basic felt quality of all VAI is that the linguistic medium of a written narrative enters the reader’s awareness qua spoken discourse. Spontaneous literary interpretation stands for any process of meaning-making, however inarticulate, that reaches the reader’s consciousness in an uninterrupted course of reading.Īlthough the necessity of phonological access for the silent processing of print is disputed, the experimental contexts in which VAI has proven to depend on lower-order embodied processes, and/or to have a pronounced effect on silent reading, are countless. e., that discrete types of VAI are associated with discrete tendencies in spontaneous literary interpretation. The central argument is that distinctions within the domain of embodied VAI also apply to higher-order meaning-making, i. More generally, the aim is to isolate a new set of embodied experiences which, along with more widely researched phenomena such as sensorimotor enactment or emotion, contribute to our understanding of literary narrative. This is a first attempt to provide a systematic theoretical account of the felt qualities and underlying cognitive mechanics of VAI, based on convergent evidence from the experimental cognitive sciences, psycholinguistic theory, and introspection. Verbal auditory imagery (VAI) in the silent reading of narrative prose, on the other hand, is mostly neglected by literary and other theorists. It is generally acknowledged that verbal auditory imagery, the reader’s sense of hearing the words on a page, matters in the silent reading of poetry.

Popcorn time netflix11/18/2023 Meanwhile, one of the most productive teams soon began to expand Popcorn Time’s capabilities. Over the coming weeks, multiple versions of the software were removed and reinstated back again. More precisely, members of YTS, which was supplying the torrent links, became one of the main known forks. Just days after the shutdown, other developers revived it from the dead. However, due to its open-source nature, this was far from the end for the project. After all, previous torrent sites such as LimeWire and Napster ended up paying tens of millions in fines to settle their own lawsuits. tracked down the developers and their respective LinkedIn pages.ĭespite the fact that the founders were not making any money from their creation, the thought of potential lawsuits made many of them nervous, to say the least. One of the lawyers working for film studio Warner Bros. Hollywood came knocking on their doors as well. Then, on March 14th, 2014, a mere two weeks after the launch, the founding team announced that it would stop working on the project. Days after the release, Mega removed the software’s installer only to reinstate it hours later. Unfortunately, the legal dubiousness of the project would soon come back to haunt the founders. Additionally, the project amassed close to 100 contributors on GitHub. Within days, hundreds of thousands of people downloaded the software. Various media outlets, such as TechCrunch or The Verge, began covering it. The founders initially shared their creation on the famous Hacker News forum from which growth spiraled. Popcorn Time, in order to show downloadable content, tapped into an API from YTS (formerly YIFY). The software was initially released for Mac, Windows, and Linux devices. He decided to rent an apartment in Buenos Aires’ Palermo district where all of the developers involved in Popcorn Time would work on the project.Īfter a few weeks of working on it, they officially unveiled Popcorn Time in early March 2014. Abad, a designer by training, wanted to create something that even his mother could use. Lastly, although torrent websites already existed, using them was not intuitive at all and required at least some technical know-how. On top of that, internet speed at the time was very slow, making it cumbersome to watch movies via popular streaming services. In Argentina, where he’s from, most movies are only released six months after their initial cinema launch. That person, who was initially known as Sebastián or Pochoclín, is Federico Abad, a designer based out of Buenos Aires, Argentina.Ībad, so the story goes, got the idea for Popcorn Time after going through his own problems of consuming newly released movies. Popcorn Time, which was created by a group of anonymous Argentinian web developers, was initially released in March 2014.Įver since its release, only one person from the original founding team has come out in public to acknowledge their role in the project. Those versions are available on various platforms such as Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux. Various forks (different versions of the software), due to their illegality as well as open-source nature, have therefore been released over the years. Popcorn Time has therefore been shut down on multiple occasions only to resurface under a new domain name. Uploading and downloading copyrighted files, as executed during the seeding process, is illegal in many jurisdictions. This is also where the legal questionability of Popcorn Time originates. That means while you consume the file, it is simultaneously shared with other peers on the network. Normally, when downloading a file through a regular torrenting network, arbitrary bits of a file are downloaded without any specified order.Īnother key characteristic of torrenting is the seeding of a file. The video is then downloaded in sequential order to ensure a smooth playing experience. Instead, it utilizes a peer network that is comprised of multiple participants from which one downloads the video. The platform utilizes torrenting technology to download the content, which is then streamed within its app.īeing built on BitTorrent means that the platform does not host any of the videos itself. Popcorn Time is an open-source software that allows anyone to download and stream media files such as videos.

Intel vs ryzen11/17/2023 It shouldn't be hard to find an air or liquid CPU cooler to keep the Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-9600K's operating temperatures under control. Our tests show that a stock Core i5-9600K can pull up to 119W with extreme workloads. Intel measures the TDP at the base clock, so the Core i5-9600K's power draw is slightly higher. The Ryzen 5 3600X and Core i5-9600K feature a 95W TDP (thermal design power). If you plan to do a fair bit of overclocking, you'll have a lot of fun with the Core i5-9600K. Intel's overclocking superiority is hard to beat. The overclock bumps the chip's power consumption up to 179W under heavy load. We managed to overclock our sample to 5 GHz on all six cores with a 1.36V Vcore and auto Load-Line Calibration (LLC) settings. However, the hexa-core processor comes equipped with a 4.3 GHz all-core boost clock. Intel advertises the Core i5-9600K with a 4.6 GHz single-core clock. Overclocking all cores to a static frequency increases performance in multi-threaded workloads, but you sacrifice lightly-threaded performance. Based on our experiences with the Ryzen 5 3600X, you're better off letting AMD's Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) feature do its job. The Ryzen 5 3600X has a 4.4 GHz single-core boost clock and the all-core frequency is around 200 MHz to 300 MHz lower the single-core value. With Intel on the brink of abandoning the LGA1151 socket, it surely isn't worth it to buy an Intel 300-series motherboard if you're interested in future-proofing. This won't change until more budget-friendly AMD 500-series chipsets come to market. X570 motherboards cost a little bit more than Z370 and Z390 motherboards due to support for new features, like PCIe 4.0. AMD, on the other hand, says it will support the AM4 socket until 2020, meaning we could see one more wave of processors on the socket before the chipmaker transitions to a new one. Reports point to Intel introducing the a new LGA1200 socket for upcoming Comet Lake desktop chips, so the LGA1151 socket already has one foot inside the retirement home. If you're interested in future-proofing, investing in a LGA1151 motherboard isn't a wise decision right now. Intel offers multiple chipsets for different needs, but assuming you want to pair the Core i5-9600K with a capable enthusiast board, the starting price for Z370 and Z390 motherboards begins around $115. Unlike the Ryzen 5 3600, the Core i5-9600K won't work on motherboards that aren't built around the Intel 300-series chipset. The Core i5-9600K drops into the LGA1151 socket. X570 motherboards, which start at $145, are the only PCIe 4.0 option at the moment until motherboard manufacturers start rolling out the budget 500-series motherboards. However, building a system around a pre-X570 motherboard means you lose out on PCIe 4.0 functionality. With the adequate firmware, the Ryzen 5 3600X will work on AMD 300-and 400-series motherboards. The Ryzen 5 3600X has great backward compatibility with prior AM4 motherboards. It's only weak point is the absence of an iGPU, so the conversation stops there if you aren't planning on using a discrete graphics card. The hexa-core processor offers more threads, 元 cache and support for the PCIe 4.0 interface and DDR4-3200 memory sticks. The Ryzen 5 3600X comes a much more generous featureset. Intel has implemented the UHD Graphics 630 iGPU inside the Core i5-9600K as well as a dual-channel memory controller with DDR4-2933 support. The Core i5-9600K checks in with a 3.7 GHz base clock and a 4.6 GHz single-core boost clock. While it does have six cores, the Core i5-9600K doesn't come with Hyper-Threading, which limits the chip to six threads. The Core i5-9600K, which is based on the Coffee Lake microarchitecture, hails from Intel's 14nm manufacturing process.

The room was clean and we checked in after 7pm with no reservation in late November which is the busy season around here. There is a space theme in the hotel and “hotel restaurant “. My husband has several medical conditions that require some adjustments, but we have always been fine without bringing along anything more than we had on this trip. To start off, we do a lot of traveling around. Of the ten Best Western Motel/Lodges we visited during this trip, the Lodge staff is by far the best. The outstanding murals in the lobby and restaurant really add to your design. It is so nice that Best Western has members like this, and that is one of the reasons we choose Best Western. We loved the Space Ship décor, the sparkles in the stucco and the beautiful murals. Gila Bend is a windy and dusty area, but the Space Age Lodge, positively sparkled. The stucco sparkled, all the beautiful lights were on, sidewalks and rooms clean. Be sure to visit the restaurant and Curio shop next door for some space age mementos.Ī month later, when reviewing some of our pictures, we are struck by how clean everything was. The trains out back and the trucks out front fade away as you drift off to sleep. Once in your cozy room the theme continues with more space pictures. Every staff member we met at the Lodge kept it clean and welcoming. Her entire attitude made us feel at home. Jennifer is by far, the best Front Desk person we’ve met during our recent travels. She proudly pointed out features of the Lodge, assisted us with the registration process and gave us excellent directions to the various surrounding sights and restaurants. 2011 joplin missouri tornado11/17/2023 In response to the tragedy at Joplin and the other devastating and powerful tornadoes of 2011, the NWS explored and eventually implemented a number of enhancements to improve severe weather warning and response. Meteorologists, structural and wind engineers, and numerous others continue to study this catastrophe even now, nearly a decade later, with the intention of creating safer communities. In its wake, the EF5 strength tornado left much of Joplin in a state of complete devastation. Due to the sheer wind power, trees were stripped of bark and asphalt was ripped from roads and parking lots. Numerous well-built houses and buildings were torn from their foundations, and vehicles of all sizes were thrown more than 200 yards and destroyed beyond recognition. With wind speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour, almost 160 fatalities and more than 1000 injuries occurred in Joplin alone, making it the 7th deadliest tornado on record. This storm generated additional tornadoes, caused extreme wind damage and flash flooding, and resulted in incredible devastation and tragic loss of life. By late afternoon, a large supercell thunderstorm had developed just east of Joplin, Missouri, producing a massive wedge tornado on the southwestern edge of the city and continued to grow in size and track directly through the heart of Joplin. Sunday, started out as a hot, humid day in the southern United States. As communities across the Southeastern US were still reeling from a busy and tragic April, an unthinkable tragedy struck again in a different part of the country about one month later. In the aftermath of the historic and deadly April 2011 Super Outbreak of tornadoes across the Southeastern US, it had become increasingly evident to the NWS that forecasts and warnings for severe weather threats needed an added element to make their messaging reach the “last mile” of effectiveness in modern-day society.
